Emily Rach Beisel- Bass Clarinet
Emily Rach Beisel is a Chicago-based improviser, composer, educator, curator, and woodwind specialist whose work is celebrated for its visceral intensity and innovative blend of techniques. Beisel’s 2023 solo album, Particle of Organs, has been described as “heavy stuff, sounds retrieved from the deeper places - the underworlds, the lightless subterranea… a raw, abrasive, oppressive, and thrilling journey (A Jazz Noise).” Beisel's music centers on the bass clarinet and incorporates voice, electronics, extended techniques, and other wind instruments creating a complex and nuanced soundscape in which the origins of sounds are often obscured.
Levi Lu- Laptop
Qiujiang Levi Lu (卢秋江) is a NYC-based performance artist, experimental musician, composer, and educator. Their work transforms the body into a sonic object through interactions with movements and audio technology, exploring identity, sound, and space. Lu designs customized feedback systems with cyborg-like body augmentations inspired by Objectophilia/animism. These include special microphones, speakers placed within bodily orifices, and an augmented amplified laptop. Their resulting performances consist of choreographed, ritualistic improvisations building upon ancient Chinese drumming traditions to manifest body dysmorphia, sexuality, spirituality, and mortality. Lu is the second-prize winner of The International Electronic Music Competition 2023. Their works have been featured at international festivals and venues such as MATA Festival, High Zero Festival, IRCAM Forum, SEAMUS conference, E-Flux, and NIME conference. Lu has also been an artist-in-residence at Elektronmusikstudion EMS Stockholm SE, ISSUE Project Room, and Harvestworks. Lu is currently a lecturer in the Department of Music at the University of Pennsylvania.
Jonathan Paik- Keyboard
Will Fredendall- Flute
Hi, Aaron Pond, here, the "CURATOR" just here to tell you that Will Fredendall is a flute shredder working in his own mystical realms. Obsessed with art and the process of rigorous visual-sonic ekphrasis, Will is never afraid to pull from the ether horror and beauty. He will be joined by fellow New England Conservatory alum Jonathan Paik who is emerging as a powerful voice in the NYC scenes of free improvisation and jazz.
